The discipline of history, as we know it, is relatively new. People have been telling their own stories in their own ways for thousands of years, all without the practices we consider necessary, such as the elimination of bias, proper sourcing, and citations. While the oral histories of many Native American tribes may not hold up to these western academic standards, who’s to say they are any less valid?
